Recently I was commissioned to photograph some images for Kent based printing company Oast House Printing. Adjacent to their Oast House, the team had converted a portion of an existing barn into a screen printing studio. It was interesting mixing my architectural photography with some of my earlier experience shooting products. The corrugated iron ceiling and timber cladding on the exterior of the barn made for some nice compositions. It was great applying some of the methods I use when photographing people in my residential and commercial interiors to bring dynamics to the images of this work space.
Tunbridge Wells Victorian Architecture
My architectural photography usually focuses on contemporary design. In the latter part of the 2021 lockdown I took the opportunity to explore my local town in Tunbridge Wells and found a new appreciation for the local victorian architecture. I’ve been happy with the results of these golden hour photowalks and am planning to continue finding interesting local spots this spring and summer.
Wedge House by Sharpe Architecture
Sharpe Architecture recently commissioned me to document this family home in Kent which had been reconfigured and extended for modern open plan living.
The design included an interesting wedge shaped extension which brought the kitchen space parallel with the views of the garden. Trying to capture the green roof and unique circular skylight made for some interesting elevated angles. The architect was keen to show the homeowner interacting with the design in the photographs which really brought the images to life and helped to communicate the space.
Innovative design in south London by DB Architects
When DB Architects approached me to photograph this mixed use building in Brixton the brief mentioned they had tried to get some photos but needed a fresh set of eyes.
After some research, I realised why this must have been tricky to shoot prior to my booking. The building was nestled in behind the historic listed frontage of an old laundry building and railway tracks running parallel to the busy Coldharbour Lane.
With the lack of space I knew that capturing the whole building in one image from ground level would be difficult. Using my Canon Tilt Shift 17mm lens I stitched several shifted exposures together. To show the curved roof and balconies I had the camera 15 feet up on a heavy duty Manfrotto stand and shot tethered through an ipad.
In a constantly evolving city like London where space is at a premium, architects are tasked with solving problems of limited space while creating buildings that are sympathetic to their environment. It was a welcome challenge on location to document an innovative and interesting piece of modern architecture in one of my favorite corners of south London.
London Infill Architecture
When London architects Studio Partington asked me to photograph these infills in Camberwell and Bermondsey it was interesting to hear how important the surrounding communities were with regard to how they wanted the architecture represented in the photos. This informed how I photographed the projects and got me thinking about the relevance of these infill designs in an urban planning and uk housing context.
Architects’ innovative infill designs are being seen more throughout city centres and continue to make the most of inner city plots by building multi use projects which have a positive effect on the surrounding communities.
The suburban and commuter towns around London have been increasingly built up with new developments and the available land for new buildings is becoming scarce. Along with this, the rising costs and distance for commuting are an incentive for people to stay in the inner city.
A solution for the problem has been to reuse empty non residential plots in the city. This ‘land-recycling’ not only works as an alternative and remedy to the ever increasing urban sprawl but actually contributes to the redevelopment of communities within city centres. Infill’s provide housing, shops and workplaces on a smaller footprint than traditional housing. I look forward to seeing this same mixed use infill design being used more in city and town centres across the uk.

Really enjoyed photographing this beautiful family home in Sevenoaks. The spaces included a bright open kitchen diner, a sleek lounge and a colourful kids play room.
Garden Studio by Kevin Corrigan
Had a brilliant time shooting this slick garden studio designed and built by east Sussex based carpenter and building contractor Kevin Corrigan. Always love shooting during the golden hour and well worth the time in post to produce my twilight image. Check out his website: www.kcorrigan.co.uk
